New Used Nissan Frontier at Kayser Used Cars for Madison, WI

Built on the same frame as the bigger Nissan Titan, the Nissan Frontier is more than a compact pickup. It's a mid-sizer in the mold of the old Dodge Dakota and today's Toyota Tacoma, and as such, it's the perfect downsize from a full-size truck when cabin room and pickup capacity are still important. And yet, the Frontier also excels when frugality's at the top of the list, since it still comes in a four-cylinder, bare-bones model.

Under the Frontier's Hood

In this scaled-down truck, we otherwise think that the Frontier's 4.0-liter V-6 offers as strong of a kick as you're going to want--and it's the equivalent of a V-8 in the full-sizers. It makes 261 horsepower, and comes with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. In manual versions you get a precise clutch feel, but the long throws could take some getting used to; otherwise the five-speed automatic works well for the V-6's torque (a peak 281 lb-ft), helping to get the most from it in passing or off the line. Towing capacities are unchanged, with the Frontier's peak of 6,500 pounds decidedly below that of full-size rigs.

Design of Nissan Frontier

Compact or mid-size trucks like the Nissan Frontier do casual duty as leisure and commuting vehicles probably more often than they're work rigs; yet the Frontier has changed very little in recent years to meet evolving tastes--especially rapidly-changing expectations about truck interiors. That said, the Frontier still has charisma, and strikes a sweet spot between spartan and spunky.  Inside, the design is quite straightforward, with inexpensive-looking materials but a tasteful layout. It's a little more plasticky, a little less fluid in layout, than the newest pickups, especially the larger ones.

Conclusions

Off-roaders will want to look to the PRO-4X and Desert Runner versions of the Frontier. The PRO-4X is the most hardcore, with Bilstein off-road dampers, a six-speed automatic transmission, skid plates, a locking rear differential, and larger BFGoodrich trail tires. The Desert Runner is available only in rear-wheel drive, but gets the Bilstein dampers plus a few exterior appearance upgrades on top of the features of the SV package.
